Global Standard for Procurement and Supply


The CIPS Global Standard for Procurement and Supply is a comprehensive competency framework. Used by individuals and organisations to enhance performance, the Standard  sets the benchmark for what good looks like in procurement and supply at all levels and across all sectors.

It helps individuals to identify current operating skills and abilities and what is needed to progress.

Organisations of all types can benchmark their procurement professionals against the competencies in the Standard and identify any skills and capability gaps.

The content has been developed through consultation with an extensive, global panel of 3000 practitioners and academics drawn from a the diverse sectors and skill sets inherent within the profession.

New for 2018

Each year we perform a percentage review of the CIPS Global Standard for Procurement and Supply.

This year we've reviewed and updated Theme 11 Ethics in Procurement and Supply. It reflects that a significant update was required to meet this fast moving key area of knowledge, understanding and capability for those working at all competency levels within the profession. 

All of CIPS products and services are underpinned by the content in the Global Standard.

    How it works

    The Standard can be used to identify the performance level of any individual, anywhere in the world, who has a responsibility for procurement full time or as part of their job role.

    We’ve developed a user guide that will introduce you and your organisation ways to apply the Standard into the workplace and into personal development plans.

    Enhance organisational performance
