Guide to... Supplier Appraisal

Welcome to the Supply Management “Guide to... Supplier Appraisal”, the second of the series of guides designed to be retained as long-term reference material.

The first guide on Contract Management proved very popular, with huge demand for additional copies from CIPS members and beyond.

Much of the content of this guide may seem pretty straightforward to many procurement professionals. However, what strikes me about it is the sheer volume of considerations that need to be taken into account when assessing a potential vendor. And any of these can, if not sufficiently well researched, lead to long-term, costly and soul-sapping problems after the ink has dried on the contract. And even when it has, performance monitoring of existing suppliers is also vital.

The devil is in the detail is an over-used term, but never has it been more true than in this case.

The next guide will address the issues of technology in procurement and will appear with the second Supply Management of July.

  • Can anyone defend the state of public sector procurement?
Call me a naysayer, but I don’t believe this paints a healthy picture of public sector procurement, which to quote bitter and twisted’s comment: “The point of it is to give the taxpayer value.” Looking at it like this, I cannot see how the current state is defendable. 07 September 2010
