Haulage firm the Stobart Group, commonly referred to as Eddie Stobart after its founder, is teaming up with A.W. Jenkinson to buy 1,000 new trucks from the British arm of Scania.

The joint purchasing deal marks the second time the two companies have pooled buying power to procure new trucks. The first deal, which was also for 1,000 trucks was signed in 2010.

Through the agreement, 300 trucks will be delivered during 2012 with the remaining 700 delivered in 2013. The order will be mainly made up of the Scania R-series Tractor model and also the G-series.

William Stobart, chief operating officer, said: “This agreement reflects our ongoing satisfaction with Scania and the levels of support provided by the company’s dealer network.”

Hans-Christer Holgersson, managing director of Scania (Great Britain), said: “Over the past two years, the partnership between Eddie Stobart, A.W. Jenkinson and Scania has continued to develop positively.”

Joint purchasing agreements have become increasingly popular over recent years as the economic climate has increased pressure on companies to find new ways to cut costs.

Since 2008, BMW has worked with fellow German carmaker Daimler to negotiate better prices on purchasing raw materials. Then in 2011 it set up a joint venture with PSA Peugeot Citroën to joint purchase car components for hybrid models. And in August it was announced that Members of the Northwest Aerospace Alliance (NWAA) are pooling their spend to secure better deals on categories such as utilities, stationery, transport and environmental expertise.
