Marks & Spencer has appointed a former General Motors executive to transform its supply chain operations.

Dirk Lembregts will start at the retail chain in January and will be a member of the company’s management committee. Lembregts previous role was executive director of supply chain at General Motors Europe.

Commenting on the appointment, a spokesman for Marks & Spencer, said: “Dirk brings with him a wealth of experience in managing complex global supply chains in a range of business areas. We look forward to welcoming him to the team.”

As a result of the appointment, Darrell Stein, who has been in charge of both logistics and IT will now just focus on IT. The company said: “Darrell has done a tremendous job in driving the huge transformation in our supply chain over the past four years and will now focus on the major role IT will play in delivering our strategic goals.”

Both Stein and Lembregts will report into CFO Alan Stewart. Reporting to Lembregts will be Alex Hatchman, head of food logistics, Andrew Walmsley head of general merchandise and international logistics and Tim Owrid, who will also join the company in the new year from SuperGroup as head of general merchandise strategic network.

In an email announcing the changes to staff, the company said: “As we continue to develop our business plans to become a leading international multichannel retailer, the development of our supply chain and our drive to faster, more innovative technology becomes increasingly important and warrants specific focus in each area.”

The company said it would provide more details of its supply chain changes once Lembregts’ had taken up the role.
