London universities and further education colleges are to benefit from what is believed to be the first joint framework agreement for Estates Maintenance Services in the sector.

LondonUniversities Purchasing Consortium (LUPC), which counts the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Goldsmiths, University of London among its members, embarked upon the deal after analysing the high level spend areas of its members.

The latest OJEU-compliant agreement runs for three years and covers mechanical and electrical maintenance, lift maintenance, asbestos and water compliance services, as well as a 'one stop shop' for members that wish to engage a single firm to provide all their fabric and mechanical and engineering services.

Director of LUPC Andy Davies said the consortium was able to identify new collaborative framework agreement opportunities thanks to a system by supply management software provider BravoSolution, which categorised high level summary spend data.

He told SM: "BravoSolution could see we wanted a low-cost solution for the consortium to get high level spend information to allow us to spot opportunities. For the first time, the London academy has the ability to call a maintenance provider without having to go through a lengthy process. The estate managers in the universities won't have to go through the EU procurement process because we've done that."

LUPC is also launching a new, shared e-sourcing portal at the end of October.
