The procurement team from the London 2012 Olympics is helping the organisers of Rio 2016 plan for their games.
Gerry Walsh, procurement director of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), said that his procurement team had put together a set of policies they used to buy goods and services for the event.
LOCOG is a private sector organisation, funded through the games’ sponsorship, ticketing, licensing and TV rights. It is responsible for fitting out buildings and buying the massive array of goods and services needed to stage the Olympic event.
“For the next summer Olympics in Brazil we have sent over a pack [describing] how we’ve set up procurement at LOCOG,” said Walsh, speaking at a CIPS Fellows’ Event in London last month. “Included in that is reference to CIPS and how it helped LOCOG and how it could help the Brazilians as well.
“The Brazilians were delighted with that pack and they are now seeking a procurement director. Once that person is in place, we will provide the Brazilian team with on-going support as appropriate and I will be introducing the work done by CIPS as a potential source of help to them.”
