The BBC,
Balfour Beatty
and FM Conway
have all joined the mayor of London’s “green procurement code”.
They are the latest organisations to sign up to
Boris Johnson’s scheme. Adopting the code commits the businesses to assess
their environmental purchasing performance to identify areas to improve and to
ensure senior management support for green buying.
In return the firms benefit from advice on
sustainable procurement and an audit of their progress to identify the areas that
require development across the supply chain. To comply with the code’s
objectives, the mayor’s office conducts a performance review and gives organisations a rating of gold,
silver or bronze.
Membership also means they can enter the Mayor of
London’s Green Awards 2011,which recognise organisations that have addressed environmental issues in their supply
chains. Last year’s winners
included Ove Arup & Partners, The Metropolitan Police and Ofgem.
