There
were more stars on show at last night’s CIPS SM Awards extravaganza than just
the teams and individuals lucky enough to scoop the evening’s prizes.
In
the Grosvenor House Hotel’s Great Room, CIPS vice president David Smith and his
band, the Front Covers, belted out classic rock tunes, helping buyers commit
murder on the dance floor into the early hours. Some said we can now add ‘rock
god’ to his myriad of titles, including chair of the Awards judges, commercial
director at the Department for Work and Pensions and Deputy CPO of the
Efficiency and Reform Group.
Another
star was Bafta-nominated actor, comedian and writer Miranda Hart, who took up
the comedy baton this year from a long line of male comics who have hosted the
ceremony. She quipped that she had only agreed to present this year’s prizes
after hearing the audience would be 70 per cent middle-aged men, which she could
have a crack at wooing.
Hart
even shamelessly flirted with the man providing the voiceover, forcing him to
announce he was a married man. Reminding the audience they were not live on television,
she told them not to pull any “fake jolly faces” if they missed out on an
award, urging: “Losers, let’s see a few strops.” She went further, adding: “I
challenge anyone to throw a glass of wine at your opponent’s face.”
Music
from the past was the soundtrack to the night, played when winners collected their
gongs, with Spandau Ballet’s Gold appropriately
used for the victorious Olympic Delivery Authority
and Here Come the Girls for the two women who picked up both individual awards.
Procurement’s
stars were all out last night and all seemed to be having some fun, regardless
of whether or not they got an award.
