“Procurement is in the
premiership” CIPS
CEO David Noble told attendees at the CIPS Conference
in London’s Kings Place today.
In his welcome speech to
conference delegates, Noble said it had become much easier for procurement to
talk to business leaders and for them to listen in light of the function’s
growing influence and global risks.
He said: “I believe strongly we
are in the spotlight like never before. The areas of risk and of the
environment have all become very topical. There’s no difficulty now of going to
see senior government ministers to talk about this profession.”
However he went on to say: “We
need more star players” in the procurement team,
with more interest in the profession needed to be generated to attract the
younger generation.
Noble said interest in PMIs was
one indication of just how procurement was influencing mainstream debate.
He said the recent manufacturing
PMI drove a “huge and significant shift” in the FX exchange.
A huge jump in the pound when
compared to the dollar occurred because the manufacturing PMI was much better
than expected.
He said: “In tracking the
accuracy of PMIs to the GDP data there’s a very, very close collaboration.”
He went on to say no other
institute in the world was growing in the way CIPS is and promised more
conferences would be launched to get the message out about the profession.
