3 December 2010 | Angeline Albert

The Toshiba Corporation is outsourcing its procurement services for nuclear power plants to the Shaw Group.

The Japanese conglomerate has given Shaw exclusive rights for 20 years to run procurement for Toshiba’s Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) nuclear power plants in the US and around the world. Toshiba would not reveal the level of spending the Shaw Group would control.

Shaw immediately assumes the role of procurement contractor for expansion plans in Texas at Toshiba’s NuclearInnovation North America power plant, which will use ABWR technology for two new nuclear units.

The Shaw Group provides engineering and support services such as procurement and will invest $250 million for its ABWR alliance with Toshiba. In financial year 2010, the Shaw group reported annual revenues of $7 billion.

"Toshiba and Shaw have a proven relationship combining our expertise and resources in nuclear power," said Shaw's CEO JM Bernhard.

"Toshiba and Shaw have already achieved a joint global leadership position in the nuclear power industry," said Yasuharu Igarashi, corporate senior vice-president of Toshiba Corporation. “Our agreement further solidifies our relationship and position in the industry.”
