The Greater London Authority (GLA) group will purchase 1,000 electric cars as part of plans to improve London's air quality.
The vehicles will form part of the GLA fleet by 2015 and will replace some less environmentally friendly cars being operated by the Metropolitan Police Authority and Transport for London, among others.
The acquisition will also bolster Mayor Boris Johnson's (pictured) hopes that there will be 100,000 electric vehicles on the capital's roads before 2020.
The announcement, part of Johnson's draft air quality strategy, also includes proposals to increase the efficiency of the GLA's logistics services by reducing freight mileage.
"By 2012 the eyes of the world will be on our city, and I am determined that we will be a cleaner, greener and less polluted city, that safeguards the health and wellbeing of its citizens," he said.
