WEEE directive deadline delayed for a third time

05 January 2006

Buyers now have more time to prepare for new laws governing electrical waste disposal.

It follows the announcement of a third delay to the Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment (WEEE) directive. Energy minister Malcolm Wicks said more time was needed to "get it right".

The UK had planned to introduce the directive in June but a Department of Trade and Industry spokeswoman said there was now "no definite deadline". The UK faces criticism from the European Commission for continuing to drag its feet.

The directive makes manufacturers, sellers of branded goods, importers - including purchasers - and exporters of electronics responsible for recycling them.

However, it is unclear at which point in the supply chain buyers become responsible for recycling.

Another formal consultation will take place shortly and draft regulations and guidance are expected in the spring.
