Supplier diversity applied in rail contract

23 October 2006 | Paul Snell

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that construction firms Balfour Beatty and Carillion have jointly won a deal to build a new rail line in east London.

TfL believes it is the first European public-sector transport organisation to encourage supplier diversity through contract conditions.

As previously reported by supplymanagement.com (News, 6 July) , these conditions include an equality policy and plans for workforce diversity.

TfL said the consortium of Balfour Beatty and Carillion would now have to comply with "rigorous equality and inclusion" clauses in the contract which require them to use local labour and materials where possible.

The contract is worth £363 million and is a key part of transport infrastructure for the 2012 Olympics. The line is expected to be open by June 2010.
