Olympic Delivery Authority launches sustainability plans

04 August 2006 | Paul Snell

Companies tendering for London Olympics contracts will be expected to demonstrate how they will meet a set of 12 sustainability objectives.

The objectives, announced by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) today, are designed to support the organisation's procurement policy (News, 3 August), and the 2012 construction commitments (Web news, 10 July), as well as wider government sustainable procurement initiatives.

David Higgins, ODA chief executive, said in a statement: "The ODA will work collaboratively with industry, using its influence and purchasing power, to enable the delivery of an economically, socially and environmentally responsible Games."

The sustainability principles cover:

· Energy · Waste · Materials · Biodiversity and ecology · Inclusion · Health and well-being · Education and employment · Housing and amenity · Transport and mobility · Culture, heritage and built form · Global, local and internal environments · Land, water, noise and air

The ODA will work with its delivery partner, when appointed, to agree performance indicators and finalise monitoring arrangements to ensure the principles are met.

A full sustainable development strategy will be published by the ODA in early 2007.
