Metro, a subsidiary of Associated Newspapers, has become the 500th company to sign up to the mayor of London's green procurement code.

Free title Metro is the first newspaper to sign up to the code, which was launched by Ken Livingstone in 2001.

By signing the code, businesses make a commitment to explore buying recycled products. In return, they are given guidance on sourcing recycled products and reducing and reusing their resources.

Initially Metro is hoping to introduce recycled paper for use in its office administration and marketing. The newspaper itself is already printed on paper that is 80 per cent recycled.

London Remade, the organisation that provides the support on behalf of the mayor to companies that sign up, will also help the newspaper find opportunities to buy environmentally friendly promotional merchandise.

Tina Perfrement, market development director for London Remade, said in a statement: "Securing the commitment of 500 companies is a real landmark for green purchasing in London.

"The range and quality of recycled products on the market ensures green purchasing is hassle-free and economically viable for companies of all sizes."
