John Dickson will become global head of procurement at drinks firm Diageo on 1 September.

Dickson left his job as vice-president, production procurement, at GlaxoSmithKline at the end of July after 13 years with the company.

In his new role at Diageo he will be responsible for 250 staff and annual expenditure of £3 billion.

His appointment follows major changes in the procurement leadership team at Diageo which took place last summer (News, 25 August 2005).

A company-wide restructuring was designed to move Diageo from a predominantly country-based to regional approach in Europe, North America and elsewhere.

Chief executive Paul Walsh said the consumer market in Europe was difficult and that the company was reorganising there to "face challenges".
