International construction firm Taylor Woodrow has appointed John Lohan as head of construction supplier development.

His job is to increase innovation from Taylor Woodrow's main suppliers in business-critical trades such as dry lining (internal wall insulation), as well as concrete and steel building frame.

Lohan said his aim was to establish more long-term relationships with about 10 key suppliers to create a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Working in conjunction with NG Bailey, Staveley Services and Rotary Group, Taylor Woodrow has completed work worth £180 million and has contracts valued at more than £300 million.

Shorter lead times, sharing of project knowledge and maximising economies of scale down into their suppliers' supply chain were priorities.

"The challenge is to obtain buy-in from the relevant stakeholders such as suppliers, colleagues and directors."

Purchasers in the construction sector must work hard to convince internal customers strategic relationships bring benefits. The ultimate success is when client and supplier can benefit from innovation that comes from either party, Lohan added.

He said high-profile projects such as Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport (see Features, 20 January) would generate better supplier relationships in the sector.

He reports to procurement director Gerald Slack, an executive board member.

Lohan was previously group head of procurement at construction company Laing O'Rourke, and began his career as a labourer on a project in Barcelona in 1991.
