Keeping hold of current employees is a greater priority for most buyers than hiring new ones.
According to the latest SM100 poll, 69 per cent of buyers prioritise the retention of staff, compared with 31 per cent who think the recruitment of new staff is more important.
A lack of quality candidates, hiring freezes because of uncertain economic conditions and the importance of ensuring continuity in departments have all highlighted the importance of retention for buyers. Those who prioritised recruitment pointed to the increased workloads of their department and the need for new talent in the profession.
Most respondents said creating a varied, interesting role and opportunities for promotion and development would encourage staff to stay and attract new recruits.
