This book is the latest in a series of What you need to know about… titles, which aim to provide an overview of core business topics.
As a primer, the advice provided is basic, but straightforward. It is not sufficiently detailed for those with leadership experience, but is an excellent starting point for those moving into such a role.
The structure is practical, with advice on developing a vision, motivating and inspiring staff and leading through change. Each chapter is broken up with illustrative quotes, case studies drawn from business, politics and sport, and brief biographies of leaders and leadership thinkers. It is also refreshing that examples come from the UK (compared to most US-centric titles) and are up-to-date, with recent case studies such as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
At times, the book focuses too closely on leading a business, rather than just a team or a project where most people are likely to gain their first experience of leadership. But the simple and practical advice presented in a helpful format can be applied by all.
